The Story

Every city keeps its darkest secret

Whitechapel, 1888. The air is thick with the scent of gin, the smell of blood in the London Hospital, and the suffocating boredom of a man too intelligent for his own era. Charles Bolingbroke is the hospital's most formidable surgeon — a virtuoso whose restless wit is as precise as his hand. Adventurous and dangerously arrogant, he treats the desperate patients of the East End with a fierce, unexpected empathy.

Felix is his closest confidant, the steady hand to Bolingbroke's mercurial genius. Wealthy and earnest, Felix is driven by a desire to heal the rotting heart of Whitechapel, yet he is haunted by a deep, gnawing jealousy of his friend's effortless brilliance. His growing resentment has finally curdled into cruel bitterness and a cold, professional enmity.

But when a string of brutal murders begins, the hospital is thrust into the centre of a mounting panic. While the police flounder, Bolingbroke is confronted by the visceral reality of the victims — women he might have saved on his own table, now reduced to butchery. He remains unaware that a much quieter, more deliberate darkness is taking root closer to home.

As the East End descends into chaos, these two men of science find themselves locked in a different kind of war. Bolingbroke remains focused on the victims' senseless suffering — while Felix discovers a darkness he is finally willing to embrace.
